The Dua of Rajab holds special significance for many Muslims as it marks the beginning of the sacred months in the Islamic calendar. The month of Rajab is a time for reflection, seeking Allah’s mercy, and preparing for the upcoming month of Ramadan.

Reciting the dua of Rajab is a way to ask for blessings, forgiveness, and protection throughout this holy period, helping believers strengthen their connection with Allah and increase in good deeds.

In this article, we’ll explore the significance of this dua and how it can strengthen your connection with Allah during Rajab.

What Is the Dua of Rajab?

muslims making the dua of rajab

Rajab is one of the forbidden four months in the Hijri (Islamic) Calendar, and Muslims recite additional prayers with much supplication during the month.

Here are some famous dua commonly recited in this month for blessing, forgiveness, and divine mercy.

1. Main Dua of Rajab:

Narrated from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (AS) and is in wide circulation:

O Allah! Bless us in the months of Rajab and Sha’ban, and let us reach Ramadan. Help us to perform fasting and standing and guarding of the tongue and lowering of the gaze. And let not our share of it be hunger and thirst.

2. Other Rajab Dua:

Recite on the 1st night of Rajab:

اللّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنَّكَ مَلِكٌ قادِرٌ عَلَى ما تَشاءُ وَ أَنَّكَ لِكُلِّ نِداءٍ سامِعٌ مُجيبٌ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

Allahumma inni as’aluka bi’annaka Malikun Qadirun ‘ala ma-tasha’u, wa annaka likulli nida’in Sami’un Mujibun, an tusalli ‘ala Muhammadin wa aali Muhammad.

O Allah, I ask You since You are the Sovereign Who is capable of everything He wills, You are Hearer of every call and Answerer of every prayer; send Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon his family.

One should read these duas with feelings of regret and humbleness towards Allah to take spiritual strength and guidance in order to prepare themselves for the holy month of Ramadan.

When to Recite the Dua of Rajab?

You can recite the Dua of Rajab for the whole month of Rajab; however, there are certain times at which it is highly recommended.

1. First date of the month of Rajab:

It is upon entering each sacred month, especially that supplications are made seeking a blessing for the days to come afterwards.

It is commendable to say the following dua at the beginning of the night of the first day in Rajab, for one’s needs and requirements in Rajab and Sha’ban, and for getting prepared to receive Ramadan:

اللَّهُـمَّ بَارِکْ لَنَا فِی رَجَبَ

Allahumma barik lana fi Rajab.

O Allah, Bless Us in Rajab.

2. Any Day of the Month of Rajab:

This again is not restricted to being said on a specific day, but one can say it on every free moment of the month.

Most people like to say dua after every Salat throughout the day though other people only say in the morning and evening with other supplications.

3. Thursday Nights – Laylat al-Raghaib:

The first Thursday night of Rajab has been termed Laylat al-Ragha’ib, which is an English transliteration for ‘Night of Desires’.

It holds a privileged status at the hands of acts of worship and hence is rewarding to recite this Rajab dua in search of forgiveness, mercy, and blessings.

4. Middle of Rajab:

It is believed that the middle of the month is considered apt to devote more time to supplication and prayer, especially at the very start of the beginning of the 15th of Rajab. Rajab dua is read to seek protection and forgiveness of sins.

5. Before or After any Good Deeds:

It is also suggested to recite dua after or before the performance of any righteous deed like Sadaqah, keeping a fast or offering extra Nafil prayers. It will be an Eidghah for the soul, remembering and pleading for mercy in front of Allah.

Nevertheless, it is most associated with the first night of Rajab. Remembering this dua and putting it into practice throughout the month will be greatly rewarding, more particularly when one is engaged in acts of worship or seeking Allah for help or repentance.

Which Surah to Read in Rajab Month?

There is no express command from the Quran or on which Surahs to read in Rajab. However, some scholars and traditions recommend certain Surahs and verses one could read in order to receive greater blessing, protection, and spiritual development in this sacred month.

Here are some of the Surahs and verses, which are traditionally recited during Rajab:

1. Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112)

This Surah, though short, contains a great declaration of the oneness of Allah. It helps strengthen one’s faith and love towards Allah during this sacred month more than usual.

2. Surah Al Kafirun (Chapter 109)

The Surah gives him strength in Tawhid-e-Elahi or oneness of Allah, and he moves further away from Shirk. During a holy month, the Sura will remind one to clean his faith once again for spiritual rejuvenation.

3. Surah Al-Qadr (Chapter 97)

This surah mentions the Night of Decree when the Quran was revealed. Even though Laylat al-Qadr occurs in Ramadan, this Surah comes with a great reward attached to frequent recitation.

Since Rajab is one of those months of preparation for Ramadan, the recitation of this Surah reminds one of the blessings and mercy stemming from the Holy Quran.

4. Surah Yasin (Chapter 36)

Surah Yasin is read for protection and mercy in return, to undo difficulties. It is also referred to as “heart of the Quran. In Rajab, many recite Surah Yasin to bless themselves and their families from evil.

5. Surah Al-Mulk (Chapter 67)

This Surah reflects the greatness of creation by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and His Supreme Power upon life and death.  During the month of Rajab, you can read it for protection both in this world and hereafter.

6. Surah Al-Baqarah (Capter 2)

The last two verses of Surah Al Baqarah (Ayat 285-286) have to be read continuously. These verses carry so much merit as a source of protection and blessings for the person who recites them on a routine basis.

7. Surah Al-Fath (Chapter 48)

Some traditions state that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) used to recite Surah Al-Fath in the month of Rajab and pray for victory and success.

Conclusion
