Supplications for the Oppressed

Supplications for the Oppressed

In honor of the global qiyam (night prayer and supplication) being held tonight in many Muslims communities in the United States and worldwide for the people of Syria, I thought to share some of the following supplications.  These are dua for the oppressed  that can be used tonight and at all times for our brothers and sisters in the deepest of oppression and difficulty the world over.  May Allah help them and relieve them of their suffering, Ameen.

Dua For The Oppressed Ummah In Arabic

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ ظُلْمِ الْمُلْكِ وَ مِنْ شَرِّ الْقَاهِرِ

Transliteration: Min sharri al-qahhar, wa min dhulmil-mulk, min Allahumma inni a’udhu bika.

Meaning: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the injustice of rulers and from the evil of the One who exercises power.”

Praying for Allah’s Pardon and Salvation in Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ أصلِحْ أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَافرِجْ عَنْ أُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ و ارحمْ أُمَّةَ مُحَمَّدٍ صلَّى الله عليٍُ مُحَمَّدٍ صلَّى الله عليه

Translation: Allahumma aslih Muhammad, the Mother of Allah. Allahumma farrij Muhammad’s Ummati. Muhammad [sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam] is Allahumma Rham.

Meaning: “O Allah, bless the Ummah of Muhammad with peace and prosperity. O Allah, take away the Ummah of Muhammad’s sorrow. Have pity on Muhammad’s Ummah (peace and blessings be upon him), O Allah.”

Bringing One’s Weakness to Allah:

In a state of weakness, turning to Allah: Arabic:

إليك نشكو أعف قوتنا، وقلة حيلتنا، وهواننا على الناس، يا أرحم الت رب أنت رب المم الراط، يا أرحم الراحمن، أنت رب المستطيين

Translation: “Al-naas, ya arhamar-rahimeen, wa qillata heelatina, wa hawanana ‘alan-naas.” Anta rabbul-mustafeen sedibbal.

Translation: “We lament to You about our frailty, our mistakes, and our humiliation in front of the people. O Most Gracious! You are the oppressed and helpless people’s Lord.”

للهم فرج عن أمة محمد أللهم ارحم أمة محمد اللهم أصلح أمة محمد

‘Allahumma aslih ummata Muhammad. Allahumma farrij `an ummati Muhammad. Allahumma Rham ummata Muhammad [salla Allahu `alayhi wa sallam.]

O Allah, improve the state of the ummah (community) of Muhammad. O Allah, grant ease to the ummah of Muhammad. O Allah, have mercy on the ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him.)

Allahumma farrij hamm al-mahmumeen min al-muslimeen.

O Allah, grant relief and ease to the distressed from the Muslims. Ameen.

Allahumma, farrij ‘an Suriya.

O Allah, grant relief and ease to Syria.  Ameen.

O Lord, by holding on to Your most gracious rope,
We bind it to our faith, and knot it to our hope.

So stand for us today, don’t counter what we try,
Forsake us not, O Lord, the blinking of an eye.

We’re powerless to stop this onslaught of their force,
Or strategize to benefit our country’s course.

We seek no good except what flows from Your wide door
And yearn for grace that comes from Your unending more.

— From The Prayer of the Oppressed by Imam Muhammad al-Dar’i (The entire supplication can be found in Arabic, with translation in English as well as an downloadable audio, here. Translation by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf.)
