Arabic: How Play Can Help Your Child Learn

Over the last few decades and especially the last few years, a lot of research has been done on learning methods. As far as children are concerned, and especially when they are young, the best way for them to learn is through play. Play-based learning can most definitely also be applied to learning a language like Arabic! So how can you make use of this to teach your child Arabic? Here are just five ideas to get you started today!

Learning vocabulary is crucial when acquiring a new language. It expands the learner's abilities in all five linguistic skills: reading, speaking, writing, understanding and increasing cultural awareness. Flashcards are therefore an essential part of the language learner's toolbox. This is why we put together stacks of vocabulary flashcards and make them available to you for free on our blog. We organize them by theme, and we highly recommend using real-life situations to make the best out of them. For instance, take our FREE Weather in Arabic Flashcards on your next outdoor expedition with your little one, or when talking with your teen about the impact of climate change!

The great outdoors is one of the best places to go all out (pun intended) on play-based learning! From a simple walk to the local park, to a more elaborate game plan with specific learning goals, there are endless possibilities outside for your child's learning! If you need some inspiration, check out our FREE Fall Treasures Hunt on our blog! Besides working on their Arabic language skills with new words and real-life application, it will also help with their focus, self control, imagination, curiosity and navigation.

Do you remember how much you loved doing those word search and crossword puzzles? Imagine having those in Arabic for your child to learn Arabic letters and expand their vocabulary, but also enhance their problem-solving skills, creativity and memory! These are all the reasons why we have published so many of these vocabulary games on our blog. Check out our latest Back To School Activity Book (also FREE!) for a handful of those fun activities that your child will likely enjoy!

There is nothing like in-person, real-life, offline play for children to develop the way they should, and we do not recommend screen time - of any kind, not even "educational" shows - for children under 2 years old. Even for older kiddos, screen time should be very limited and always monitored. At this point, whatever they watch on a screen should be engaging in ways that are meaningful for their development. Along with our online classes for kids and teens, we have developed many online activities and games for our students to practice what they learn in class in fun and interactive ways, and this is a complimentary feature that comes automatically when enrolling in any of our online classes for kids and teens! There is no way around the Arabic alphabet: it needs to be memorized. But choosing between making this process boring and redundant, or colorful (even quite literally!) and fun is up to you! As always we are here to help: from our Arabic Alphabet Chart to our Arabic Letters Flashcards, and our many word games (word search, word puzzle, etc.), pick the resources that will guide your child in the best possible way through this amazing first step in their Arabic learning journey! Yes, you can use these resources for yourself too :-)
